“But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.”
Isaiah 40:31 NLT
She struggled violently with her captors fighting with every pained air that escaped her lungs. She needed to be free; Free from the chains that so heavily weighed on her hands and feet, Free from the sneers and leery eyes that mocked her from afar, Free from her captors whose faces she was yet to see, But most of all, She needed space to breathe. To exhale like she had once done before and take joy in the fact that the air that she inhaled through her nostrils was clean and unadulterated. To breath through her nostrils was a luxury she even found too hard to imagine. How long had it been since she was trapped here? Months? Years maybe? Time passed so fast that she found it hard to keep track of the minutes. The people who passed by her seemed very oblivious to her struggle. She wondered what it was they saw when they looked at her. Did they see the chains? Could they even see her struggle? Why wasn’t anyone helping her out? It was either they couldn’t see her dilemma or just didn’t care. But either way, this had gone on for far too long and quite frankly, she was tired. Enough was enough. Today, she was determined to end the struggle. As Sarah, struggled to get herself free from the bondage she was in, she realized with startling clarity, the truth of her predicament. The chains came undone with ease as soon as she tried to pry them off. She was perplexed and somewhat disturbed. Does that mean…..No it couldn’t be. So why did the chains feel so heavy all this time if they weren’t even clasped on properly. Walking away from what had been the cage her mind had put her in, Sarah left in the full knowledge of the truth she had not known all this time. She was free. She had always been. The truth indeed shall set you free.
Moral lesson #5: To you who is fighting a battle that has already been won. Battling the chains of social stereotypes, pedestals that seem too high to reach, self esteem issues, emotional trauma, guilt for your countless trespasses. Whatever your chains may be. Whatever it is that is limiting you from being who you were created to be. My message to you today is that you are free. Free to be who you want. Free to soar the heights that your mind can only imagine. One of the very crucial steps in self discovery is understanding the basic truth that you are an independent individual. Free to be who you want to be. As Nigeria celebrates their independence today, ask yourself what am you free from?
